A Chinese animated film called “Niu Lai,” criticized online for its crude, “ugly” and “eerie” 3D visuals, has unexpectedly become a box office sensation. The film follows a calf who dreams of growing up with his family’s support.

Released Aug. 5, it earned only about 10,000 yuan ($1,480) in its first 10 days — on some days as little as 200 yuan ($30) — a dismal showing during China’s competitive summer movie season.

But scathing reviews sparked a wave of online curiosity, and box office takings surged to 8.2 million yuan ($1.2 million) on Monday alone, with nearly 300,000 admissions. Total box office has now reached 17.1 million yuan ($2.5 million).

According to Chengdu-based Red Star News, the film was made over five years by just two people: director Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifan.
